The Android 2011 mobile phone guide

If I was forced me to say what my favourite thing about Android was it would have to be choice. You can choose which apps you install, you can choose how you want your mobile to look and most importantly, you can choose what your phone is like. If you want an expensive but powerful mobile, you can buy it. If you want a cheap and cheerful mobile, you can buy it. In fact, there is an Android mobile that will suit just about anyone, just as long as they don’t have Smartphone phobia.
Of course, there are hundreds of Android mobiles out there, in this article I will only consider phones launched this year assuming you will want to buy the latest mobile.

The no expenses spared Guy

You want the best and money isn’t going to get in the way!

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

The Sony Ericsson has received mixed reception. It has been branded as a PlayStation mobile so has a game pad and lets you buy and play ps1 games. The mobile is designed very well but has very low specs considering the premium price tag. Even though this is my favourite premium Android mobile of 2011, it is not my favourite launched this year.

  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread (Very good)
  • 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon Scorpion processor (Good)
  • 512mb of RAM, 400mb Internal storage (Bad)
  • 4.0-inch display with a 480 x 854 resolution (Good)
  • 5MP back-facing camera + front-facing camera (Good)
  • Lithium 1500 mAh battery (Good)
  • Virtual keyboard + physical Game pad

The average Guy

You don’t want to spend a fortune on your Android mobile but you definitely want a decent one. 1. Motorola Atrix 4G 2. HTC Inspire 4G

Motorola Atrix 4G

The Motorola Atrix 4G is a stunner. It has one of the sharpest screens and one of the biggest batteries. The mobile not only looks great but performs great with a dual core 1ghz tegra 2 processor. Be careful though, Motorola have a history of being slow at making Android available for their mobiles. If your phone is rooted you won’t have a problem with slow updates because the community will make updates for you. Despite slow updates, the Atrix 4G has received a fantastic response and all I am going to say is, I want one!
  • Android 2.2 Froyo (1 version out of date)
  • Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 Tegra 2 proccessor (Very good)
  • 1 GB of RAM, 16gb Internal storage (Very good)
  • 4.0-inch display with a 540 x 960 resolution (Very good)
  • 5MP back-facing camera + front-facing camera (Good)
  • Lithium 1930 mAh battery (Very good)
  • Virtual keyboard

HTC Inspire 4G (US) / HTC Desire HD (Europe)

The HTC Inspire 4G was recently launched in the US and is almost identical to the HTC Desire HD. Both mobiles have a large 4.3 inch screen and they are both on the bulky side. The two mobiles are very good but are let down by poor battery life, the lack of a dual core processor and the HD less resolution on that massive screen.
  • Android 2.2 Froyo (1 version out of date)
  • 1GHz Scorpion Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor, (Good)
  • 768mb of RAM, 4gb Internal storage (Good)
  • 4.3-inch display with a 480 x 800 resolution (Good)
  • 8MP back-facing camera + front-facing camera (Very good)
  • Lithium 1230 mAh battery (Bad)
  • Virtual keyboard

The cheap and cheerful Guy

You don’t want to spend a fortune on your Android mobile and you don’t mind making a few sacrifices. 1st: Motorola Cliq 2 2nd: 3rd:

Motorola Cliq 2

The Motorola Cliq 2 was announced at CES 2011 and has since been released. Although the mobile has been over shadowed by more expensive Smartphones such as the Motorola Atrix 4G, the Cliq 2 has proven to be a great budget handset.
  • Android 2.2 Froyo (1 version out of date)
  • 1GHz  proccessor (Good)
  • 512mb of RAM, 1gb Internal storage (Bad)
  • 3.7-inch display with a 480 x 854 resolution (Good)
  • 5MP back-facing camera (Good)
  • Lithium 1420 mAh battery (Good)
  • Real Qwerty keyboard

Conclusion

I didn’t include the LG optimus 2x because I don’t feel that its specs or design justify it’s premium price tag, what do you think? I also didn’t include the Thunderbolt or EVO Shift 4G because they are very similar to the HTC Inspire 4G and the Inspire 4G has an alternative for people outside the USA.
My favourite Android mobile of 2011 has to be the Motorola Atrix 4G. The mobile has a very decent price tag and beats all of the other Android mobiles released in 2011 in terms of specification and design. So, it looks great, it performs great and the price is great! What more could you want?
There are many great mobiles that haven’t been announced or released yet such as the HTC Holiday. For now though, these are the latest and greatest.
